RESEARCH ABSTRACT
This research paper is my capstone project for my Accessibility Studies minor. The goal of this project was to research a venue with the need for accessible design and write a plan. My venue is the fashion industry and I chose to create a written proposal along with a technical package for an adaptive football jersey. I was able to apply skills and knowledge from both my accessibility studies minor and apparel major.
The fashion industry is a large venue that revolves around creating products for the average consumer. However, there is a large market for individuals with disabilities who need access to adaptive clothing that gives them a sense of individuality. This paper specifically looks at the need for adaptive football jerseys in the fashion industry. Research includes how adaptive clothing differs from average consumer clothing, the impact sports have on one’s identity, and understanding the physical and social effects of Down syndrome. The following case study observes Larry Berg, a 65-year-old football fan with Down syndrome. In conclusion, creating an adaptive football jersey would give people with disabilities a sense of independence, inclusion, and comfort. Fashion can give consumers a sense of identity and individuality.
